The Art of Asking Questions: How Curiosity Drives Professional Growth

By Stone Montgomery

As a senior in college, I’ve come to understand that learning is a continuous process of seeking advice and asking questions—not just absorbing information from lectures and textbooks. To be honest, though, I don’t always find it easy to ask questions. When I first started working as an intern at Gardner, I was nervous about asking for help. I worried that I might come across as inexperienced or unprepared. However, I’ve discovered that one of the best ways to grow as both a learner and a professional is to ask questions.

Throughout my time in college, I’ve struggled with asking for help, and that hesitation followed me into my internship at times. I used to believe that asking questions might make others doubt my abilities. But I’ve realized that asking questions actually shows the opposite—it demonstrates that I care about my work and want to improve. As I became more comfortable asking questions, I began to feel more confident. Knowing I had the information I needed made it easier to take on new tasks without feeling overwhelmed. I still get nervous when I have to ask questions, but I know that doing my work effectively comes first. Asking questions and getting the answer I want is better than keeping quiet and running the risk of making a mistake. Making sure I have the understanding I need to give my best effort is part of being responsible, and the work I do matters. Another important realization I’ve had is that even experienced professionals are always asking questions. Everyone is constantly learning, and seeking clarification or guidance is never a sign of weakness.

What I’ve learned about the power of questions is as follows:

  • They Clear Up Confusion: I can save time and make sure I’m headed in the right direction by asking questions that assist me  and understand exactly what is required of me.

  • They Lead to New Insights: At times a question starts discussions that go beyond the current task and provide me with fresh viewpoints.

  • They Create Better Bonds: I can have meaningful talks with my supervisors and build trust and cooperation when I seek assistance or feedback.

Asking questions is a habit I know will be crucial as I get ready for life after graduation. My ability to ask questions will help me adjust to new situations, work well with others, and make wise decisions—skills that will be essential wherever my career leads me.Stone Montgomery, Class of 2025Blog post #4
